Without the Gaol work assigned to the Assistant Superintendent there will be plenty of Police work for 3 Executive Officers.

I have therefore to recommend that the Deputy Supt. of Police be relieved of the appointment of Assistant Superintendent of the Gaol, and that Mr. R.H. Craig, Chief Warder, be appointed Assistant Superintendent on a Salary of $2400 rising by triennial increment of $300 per annum to $3000 per annum.

Mr. Craig had over 15 years service in the Prison Service in England and joined this service as Chief Warder (then called Warden) in February 1895.

Mr. Craig is a thoroughly experienced Prison official and has done an immense amount of valuable work since he has been here in assisting in re-organising the Prison Staff and the whole system of Prison administration, and in my opinion his services deserve some substantial recognition, and I beg strongly to recommend his promotion which will not entail any heavy expenditure on Government.

If this appointment is approved I would recommend Principal Warder Pierpoint to be Chief Warder, and Warder Wilkinson to be Principal Warder.
